Who doesn’t like upvas/vrat food? I love most of vrat dishes. They are delicious. The thing l love about most of them are cooking in ghee and cumin seeds adds wonderful flavour to it. Recently I saw Rujuta Diwekar, famour nutritionist posted a picture of ratalyacha kees (grated sweet potato), I was curious how do people make it. So started doing my research. It is a very famous recipe from Maharashtra served for breakfast. This recipe can be prepared in different ways. You can prepare it to eat during Hindu fasting (upvas/vrat) or for the regular meal. Since I was fasting, I decided to to try farali version. I am now regretting that why didn’t I tried it before. My husband and I both loved it so much that I prepared it again in following week. This recipe is very easy to prepare and needs few ingredients from your pantry.
I started using more sweet potato and raw banana instead of potato in my cooking. They are so much better for health. So this recipe is a keeper. I absolutely loved it.
This recipe serves 2 people.
Preparation Time: 15 minutes
Cooking Time: 10 minutes
Ingredients:
2 medium or 1 large sweet potato grated
1 tbsp ghee
1 tsp cumin seeds
2 green chili chopped
1/2 cup peanuts roasted & crushed
Salt to taste
Curry leaves (optional)
Coriander/cilantro leaves (optional)
1/4 cup grated coconut (optional)
Procedure:
1. Grate sweet potato using thick grater. Soak it in the water right away or it will turn brown. At time of cooking, remove from water and sqeeze all the water out before using.
2. Dry roast peanuts. Remove skin and crush slightly.
3. Heat pan with 1 heaping tbsp ghee. Add cumin. If you are using curry leaves, then add at this time. When cumin start to change colour, turn down the heat to medium and add chopped green chilies. Stir everything. Then add grated sweet potato, crushed peanuts, salt. Mix well. If you like slightly sweet, you can add 1/2 tsp sugar. Cover the pan with lid and let this cook on low to medium heat for 6-7 minutes. You will see while steam coming out. Sweet potato doesn’t take long to cook. Turn off the heat. If you are adding fresh grated coconut then add to the pan and mix well. Let is sit for few minutes covering the lid. This helps in removing the kees if it has stuck to the bottom. This brown part taste the best. Garnish with cilantro (optional) before serving.
4. This is like a meal in itself. Serve it in the breakfast or with main meal. It’s perfect farali side dish which is healthy and tasty.
You can add lemon juice if you like. I personally ate as it is with plain yogurt. Flavors of ghee and cumin are outstanding. Peanuts added the slight crunch to it. I have not tried with fresh coconut but I’m sure it will taste even better. You can serve it to young and old. If you are making it for small kids then skip green chilies. Do try!.
Let me know if you have any questions regarding the dish. Your suggestion is welcome.
