Hello Friends,
This sweet dish we call it shiro/shira is very popular among Gujaratis, and other one is lapsi/kansar. This is such an easy and quick sweet dish. It is usually prepared when we have unexpected guests for lunch or dinner. Everyone loves it and we use jaggery instead of sugar so it makes it healthier. It is also very popular during winter months as this sweet dish is eaten hot/warm. It only needs 4-5 ingredients and it taste amazing 😛 😛 . It is also perfect for the kids. We also feed this to new mom but we add few more ingredients. It is so soft and doesn’t need much chewing so it helps to the person with tooth ache. I also make this when someone in my family is not well or feeling weak and I want to feed them some healthy fat. I also add ajwain/caraway seeds and dry ginger powder to enhance the taste and health benefits, but you can always avoid it. To tell you the truth, we just need some excuse to eat this yummy sweet dish 😉 😀 .
Preparation Time: 5 minutes
Cooking Time: 15-20 minutes
Ingredients:
1 cup wheat flour
5 tbsp ghee (clarified butter)
1 tsp ajwain/caraway seeds
1/2 cup jaggery
1/3 tsp dry ginger powder
2 cup boiling water
Procedure:
1. In a heavy bottom pan, heat 5 tbsp ghee. When ghee is slightly hot, add ajwain and roast for few seconds. Then add flour and continue to cook on low to medium heat stirring continuous. This mixture can burn easily so remember to stir continuous. In 5-7 minutes, the flours start to turn slightly brown and it will release wonderful flavour.
2. Add 2 cups boiling water, dry ginger powder and jaggery (broken in to small pieces) in flour mixture. Be careful when you add boiling water to the mixture. Cook on low and continue to stir. When all the water evaporates, jaggery melts and you will notice shira will start to leave the bottom of the pan (3-5 minutes), turn off the heat and shira is now ready.
3. Serve this scrumptious shira/halwa when hot. Believe me it doesn’t need any garnishing!!
You can eat this anytime of the day. Hope you will enjoy this dish as much as my family love it!. Give it a try and let me know if you have any question.
