Sometimes we get extra coconut and don’t know what to do with it. I actually buy coconut with shell when I find a good deal. I don’t use it immediately. I freeze the grated coconut to make chutney or to use in the sauce. I also make the dried coconut at home, which I use while I make chivda or some other snacks. I know how hard is to remove the shell from the whole coconut. Sometime I even cut my finger. When I successful removed the coconut from the shell using the trick, I thought why not share it with you. So here sharing the tips and tricks on how to easily remove coconut from shell. I also want to share how I make dried coconut at home from the fresh one.
How to easily remove coconut from shell
Trick -1
You will need coconut without husk. The trick is to put the coconut in the freezer for at least 2-3 hours before you start removing shell. When you are ready, hit the coconut lightly with hammer rotating all sides . It will break the coconut and also separate meat from the shell. You may be able to pull out the whole coconut from the shell.
Trick – 2
1. If you notice closely, there are 3 eyes on coconut. 2 of these eyes are hard and one is soft. If you touch with your nails, you can scrap the top from soft eye. You can actually make a hole with sharp knife in soft eye. Then remove the water in the glass.
2. You will see 3 lines on coconut shell. Heat hammer or heavy object on all the lines. In a minute or so, you will notice coconut will break in half. On low heat, you can then heat all the sides of coconut for less than a minute. Do not keep for long or oil will start to separate. Using butter knife, start separating coconut flash from the shell. You will notice, it separates very easily. You can then turn into dry coconut or make chutney or just freeze grated coconut for later use. You can easily peel the skin of coconut using peeler.
How to make dried coconut at home
To make the dried coconut, you will need a coconut without shell. Make the thin 1″ to 1 1/2″ long slices using knife. Spread it in a plate and put it in the refrigerator (not freezer). Every 2-3 days move your finger in the plate just to move the coconut around, it will help in drying process. It takes around 15-20 days to dry. If not, keep open for few days. Then store in a container and keep in the refrigerator.
