Mango Onion Chutney / Thecho

I just ate this chutney and could wait to share the recipe while I still have the taste in my mouth 😛 😛 Will you believe if I said that I ate this chutney after almost 20 years, that is absolutely correct! I am regretting not preparing it for so long. I was craving it for sometime but somehow never prepared it. When we were young my mom used to prepare this chutney during summer when green mangoes were in season. It’s mango onion chutney but we call it thecho. In India, it is very hot during summer and this dish helps to protect from heat wave (that’s what I have heard). It is sweet and sour chutney which we eat with khichdi (prepared using lentils and rice) and paratha. It is a very simple recipe with no cooking involve and only require few ingredients.

Preparation Time: 10 minutes

Cooking Time: 0 minutes

Ingredients:
1 raw green mango grated
1 medium onion grated
1/2 tsp cumin powder
1/4 tsp red chili powder
Lump of jaggery or sugar
Pinch of salt
Fresh coriander leaves for garnishing

Procedure

Mix all the ingredients in a bowl. Break jaggery with hands so it blends well with the mixture without lumps. Garnish with chopped coriander. If you prepare an hour before eating, it releases sauce which is the best thing. The sourness of mango and sweetness of jaggery with slight heat from chili powder and onion makes this a perfect condiment. Cumin powder adds smoky flavour to this chutney.

You can add more or less jaggery or sugar as per you taste. It not only goes well with Indian food but you can try it with burgers or use it as a dip. Try it to believe it! I am sure you will say “dil mange more” 😀 😀
