Home-made Protein Powder

When I buy whey protein, first of all I don’t like the flavour and I find it too sweet. We Indians, many of whom are vegetarian, get the protein mostly from beans, dairy, nuts and seeds. Recently I went to Indian grocer and I saw protein powder (it was called horse powder). I read the ingredients which were in pantry. I bought one pack to taste. It was expensive and I noticed they added the cheapest ingredient the most. When I finished the pack, I told my husband that I am going to prepare it at home. When we prepare something  at home, we don’t care if the ingredient is cheap or expensive, we add what is good for the family, and that’s what I did! The powder was so delicious, full of flavour and loaded with protein.

This powder is good for young and old and even for small children and new mom. It is also really good during winter months as all the ingredients in this provides energy to the body.

Preparation Time: 30 minutes

Cooking Time: 20-25 minutes

Ingredients:

1 cup roasted split chana dal (daliya)
1/2 cup almond
1/2 cup walnut
1/3 cup pistachio
1/2 cup flex seeds
1/2 cup sesame seeds (brown)
1/3 cup sunflower seeds
1/3 cup pumpkin seeds
2 tsp cardamom powder

Procedure:

1.  Roast almond, walnut, pistachio either in microwave (2 mins each) or in oven or in pan. Also, dry roast sesame seeds, flex seeds, sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds in a pan on low to medium heat until slightly brown.

2. When all seeds and nuts cool down , grind it with rest of the ingredients  to a fine powder using dry grinder or coffee grinder. Store in an air tight container and put in refrigerator to keep it fresh.

3. You can add 1 tsp powder to 1 cup of warm milk, and little sugar (if you like sweet), mix well and drink. Since we roasted all the nuts and seeds, it has this wonderful aroma. Cardamom adds little Indian flavour to this protein powder. I am sure, you will never go back to those regular protein powder available in store.
